Sammamish Commons – The Unofficial City Directory

Sammamish Commons is the heart of Sammamish — both literally and in spirit.

Perched just behind City Hall and the library, the Commons isn’t a traditional park in the usual sense. It’s more like three spaces in one: a wide-open plaza where community events happen, a sports and play area for everyday use, and a trail-lined greenbelt that feels surprisingly peaceful for being right in the middle of town.

We’ve spent more hours here than we can count — watching summer concerts with lawn chairs in tow, letting the kids run wild on the playground, and walking the winding trail behind the trees just to decompress. It’s the kind of place you visit without planning to stay long and end up lingering.

Hours of Operation

Park Hours:
Dawn to dusk daily

Please note that hours may change due to holidays or special events. It is recommended to check the park’s website or call ahead for any updates.

The Upper Park (Near City Hall)

This is the most “city park” section of the Commons, and it’s perfect for families.

  • Playground: Big, colorful, and designed for all ages — including climbing structures, slides, and plenty of open space nearby for kids to run.
  • Basketball courts: Full court, usually busy after school hours.
  • Skate spot: A small but well-designed skate area for scooters and boards.
  • Restrooms: Yes — actual restrooms, not just porta-potties.

This area gets sun most of the day, so sunscreen is a must in the summer. In the evenings, especially during events, it turns into a relaxed hangout zone.

The Lower Commons (Open Lawn & Trails)

Take the paved path downhill and you’ll find the part of Sammamish Commons that feels more like a nature park.

  • Walking trails: Looping gravel and paved trails through meadow and light forest — stroller- and dog-friendly.
  • Benches and overlooks: Some spots have surprisingly good views toward the Issaquah valley.
  • Open lawns: Great for a picnic, throwing a frisbee, or just sitting and doing absolutely nothing.

In spring, this part of the park is full of wildflowers and bees. In fall, the tall grass turns golden and it’s one of the best low-effort spots for a nature walk in town.

The Plaza (Community Space)

Right in front of City Hall is a wide plaza used for:

  • Farmers markets
  • City-hosted events like [Fourth on the Plateau] or Sammamish Days
  • Concerts and movie nights in summer
  • Pop-up food trucks (especially during events)

It’s not a destination on its own, but when something’s going on, this is where it happens.

Why We Love It

  • Central location — walkable from the library, schools, and nearby neighborhoods
  • Something for every age — playgrounds for kids, trails for walkers, events for everyone
  • Safe, clean, and well-maintained
  • Frequent community events without feeling over-commercialized
  • Tons of open space, even when it’s busy

Parking & Access

  • Main parking: Behind City Hall (off 228th Ave SE)
  • Overflow parking: Library lot and along adjacent streets
  • Walkable: Many families come here by foot or bike from nearby neighborhoods
  • Trail access: Lower Commons connects with the Sammamish Trail system — good for joggers or dog walks

Good to Know

  • Bathrooms: Real restrooms near the playground
  • Dog-friendly: Yes, leashed — and plenty of cleanup stations along the trails
  • Drinking fountains: Near the upper playground and plaza
  • No lake or water features — despite the name, this park is all greenbelt and hillside
  • Best times to visit: Late afternoons, golden hour, or during an event for that real community feel

Events to Watch For

  • Sammamish Farmers Market (seasonal)
  • Summer Movie Nights — bring a blanket and some snacks
  • Fourth on the Plateau — live music, fireworks, food trucks
  • Earth Day, Arbor Day, and other city-hosted events throughout the year

Final Thoughts

Sammamish Commons isn’t just a park — it’s where the city shows up. Whether you’re here for a quiet walk or a packed Friday night concert, it somehow balances peaceful and energetic all in one place.

If you’re new to town, this is where you’ll feel Sammamish. And if you’re a longtime local, it’s probably already part of your routine — even if you don’t call it by name.
