The name Sammamish comes from the Lushootseed language spoken by the Coast Salish peoples. It’s often translated as “hunter people” or “willow people,” a reference to the area’s original inhabitants and the landscape they lived in.

Long before it became a city, this area was home to the Sammamish people, who lived along the river that now bears their name. That river connects Lake Sammamish to Lake Washington and was once central to their way of life.

Here, we’re dedicated to exploring the modern city that grew from that history. Whether you’re a visitor, a local, or just curious, you’ll find tips, stories, and local insights to help you get to know Sammamish, past and present.
