The name “Sammamish” is derived from the Native American Lushootseed (Puget Salish) word “saməmish,” which roughly translates to “hunter people” or “willow people,”.
The Sammamish River, which connects Lake Sammamish to Lake Washington, was historically the homeland of the Sammamish people, a group of Coast Salish Native Americans.
This is the namesake of the present-day city of Sammamish which sits on the shore of Lake Sammamish. The name reflects the area’s rich indigenous history and its connection to the Native American tribes that once lived in the region and have shaped the identity of Sammamish over the years
